100 Years on the Road: The Traveling Salesman in American Culture

100 Years on the Road: The Traveling Salesman in American Culture

$33.77

Even today, in Death of a Salesman and The Music Man, the traveling salesman is an intriguing, almost mythic figure. In this lively and vividly illustrated account – the first in-depth study of the traveling salesman, or drummer – Timothy Spears investigates the salesman’s role in American culture during his heyday, between 1830 and 1920. Drawing on such sources as diaries, advice manuals, autobiographies, and trade journals, Spears shows how traveling salesmen shaped the customs of life on the road, established the foundations of scientific salesmanship , and helped to develop modern consumer culture. Spears reconstructs the cultural history of face-to-face sales during this period, describing the nature of traveling life, the development of strategies for selling to the trade rather than door-to-door, and the problematic relationship of the salesman to society – first as the agent of an emergent, intrusive market and later as a target for critics of vulgar commercialism. Throughout, Spears offers original and persuasive readings of works by Arthur Miller, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis, and Eudora Welty and illuminates other cultural representations of the traveling salesman.

 A Miracle of Catfish

A Miracle of Catfish

Larry Brown has been a force in American literature since taking critics by storm with his debut collection, Facing the Music, in 1988. His subsequent work five novels, another story collection, and two books of nonfiction continued to bring extraordinary praise and national attention to the writer New York Newsday called a master. In November 2004, Brown sent the nearly completed manuscript of his sixth novel to his literary agent. A week later, he died of a massive heart attack. He was fifty-three years old. A Miracle of Catfish is that novel. Brown’s trademarks his raw detail, pared-down prose, and characters under siege are all here. This beautiful, heartbreaking anthem to the writer’s own North Mississippi land and the hard-working, hard-loving, hard-losing men it spawns is the story of one year in the lives of five characters an old farmer with a new pond he wants stocked with baby catfish; a bankrupt fish pond stocker who secretly releases his forty-pound brood catfish into the farmer’s pond; a little boy from the trailer home across the road who inadvertently hooks the behemoth catfish; the boy’s inept father; and a former convict down the road who kills a second time to save his daughter. That Larry Brown died so young, and before he could see A Miracle of Catfish published, is a tragedy. That he had time to enrich the legacy of his work with this remarkable book is a blessing.

Adaptive Cooperation Between Driver and Assistant System: Improving Road Safety

Adaptive Cooperation Between Driver and Assistant System: Improving Road Safety

$9.11

One of the next challenges in vehicular technology field is to improve drastically the road safety. Current developments are focusing on both vehicle platform and diverse assistance systems. This book presents a new engineering approach based on lean vehicle architecture ready for the drive-by-wire technology.Based on a cognitive functionality split, execution and command levels are detailed. The execution level centralized over the stability control performs the motion vector coming from the command level. At this level the driver generates a motion vector which is continuously monitored by a virtual co-pilot. The integration of assistance systems in a safety relevant multi-agent system is presented here to provide first an adequate feedback to the driver to let him recover a dangerous situation. Robust strategies are also presented for the intervention phase once the command vehicle has to be optimized to stay within the safety envelope.

He is most famous for his tenure as a member of the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, with whom he performed and recorded from 1985 to 1990. He is currently the drummer for his own project titled Adler’s Appetite. Adler was born into the Jewish faith and has some Icelandic heritage. Adler moved to Los Angeles, California, with his mother, Deanna, and older brother Kenny, as a young child. His mother re-married to Melvin Adler and had another child, Jamie. Steven’s younger brother Jamie is a booking agent for such hip-hop acts as Bone Thugs N’ Harmony and Tyrese. Steven’s nephew, Max, is also involved in the entertainment business producing stage-shows in Las Vegas and several reality television shows. Adler met future Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash at the age of 12. The two attended the same junior high school in California and when Adler had a skateboarding accident, Slash stopped to help him. The two became fast friends, and as Slash took up guitar, Adler gave up the guitar himself and took up drums, in order to form a band (albeit missing some components), Road Crew. Following the breakup of Road Crew, both Adler and Slash tried out for local glam metal group London. Slash and Adler met their future Guns N’ Roses bandmates when they placed an advertisement in the Los Angeles Times searching for a bassist for their band. Duff McKagan responded to the ad, and later worked with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in Hollywood Rose, who Slash had originally auditioned for, before merging with L.A. Guns (Rob Gardner, Tracii Guns and Ole Beich) to create Guns N’ Roses. Eventually the L.A. Guns members departed the group and were replaced by Slash, McKagan and Adler in what is n… More:

An Eye for Gold (Em Hansen Series #6)

$0.01

Packed with suspense, science and lots of gold, Sarah Andrews’ sixth novel takes us from the eagles’ domain high over the American West right down into the depths of the earth itself. Like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, Andrews’ engaging heroine, forensic geologist Emily Hansen, uses geological clues to solve crimes. Now, fresh from extricating herself-just barely-from suspicion in the investigation of the murder of a dinosaur paleontologist in Salt Lake City, Em allows a wily FBI agent to talk her into assisting the Bureau on another case. Em and the agent head into the deserts of Nevada: gambling and gold mining country, where fortunes-and lives-are won and lost. Their task is to investigate the high stakes behind conflicting reports about an endangered species on federal land, land the government has leased to a proposed billion-dollar gold-mining operation. But when they arrive, they discover the case has taken an alarming and lethal turn. The biologist they have flown five hundred miles to interrogate lies dead in her pickup truck at the edge of a lonesome road, and a key mining geologist has gone missing. What started as a simple fraud investigation quickly develops into an intricate murder case in which Em must unravel the secrets of gold, the desert, and an Indian tribe struggling to maintain its secrets. The wide-open spaces harbor a deadly enigma that is all too human-and what’s at stake is not just Em’s life. Andrews has updated observations into the dirt on dead men’s shoes for the golden age of high-tech forensic analysis. An Eye for Gold is an enthralling, nail-biting adventure in the air and underground-her best book yet.

 Aspects of Wardrop Equilibria

Aspects of Wardrop Equilibria

$96.99

Wardrop introduced his game-theoretic model in the 1950s for describing resource sharing problems in the context of road traffic systems. Nowadays, it is mainly used to model digital traffic in communication networks. A common interpretation of the Wardrop model is that an infinite number of agents is responsible to route an infinitesimal amount of traffic through a network. Each agent chooses one path from its origin to its destination, where the agent’s disutility is the sum of traffic dependent edge latencies on this path. A solution concept for this game is provided by the theory of Wardrop equilibria. The primary goal of this book is to provide a deeper understanding of Wardrop equilibria. We identify several problems whose solution captures the essence of Wardrop equilibria. First, we study natural and innovative means to reduce the price of anarchy. Secondly, we analyze the stability of equilibria regarding modifications of the network environment. Finally, we propose a distributed algorithm for computing approximate equilibria.

 Color of Lightning

Color of Lightning

In 1863, the War Between the States creeps slowly yet inevitably toward its bloody conclusion—and eastern thoughts are already turning to different wars and enemies. Searching for a life and future, former Kentucky slave Britt Johnson is venturing west into unknown territory with his wife, Mary, and their three children—wary but undeterred by sobering tales of atrocities inflicted upon those who trespass against the Comanche and the Kiowa. Settling on the Texas plains, the Johnson family hopes to build on the dreams that carried them from the Confederate South to this new land of possibility—dreams that are abruptly shattered by a brutal Indian raid upon the settlement while Britt is away establishing a business. Returning to face the unthinkable—his friends and neighbors slain or captured, his eldest son dead, his beloved Mary severely damaged and enslaved, and his remaining children absorbed into an alien society that will never relinquish its hold on them—the heartsick freedman vows not to rest until his family is whole again. Samuel Hammond follows a different road west. A Quaker whose fortune is destroyed by a capricious act of an inscrutable God, he has resigned himself to the role the Deity has chosen for him. As a new agent for the Office of Indian Affairs, it is Hammond’s goal to ferret out corruption and win justice for the noble natives now in his charge. But the proud, stubborn people refuse to cease their raids, free their prisoners, and accept the farming implements and lifestyle the white man would foist upon them, adding fuel to smoldering tensions that threaten to turn a man of peace, faith, and reason onto a course of terrible retribution. A soaring work of the imagination based on oral histories of the post–Civil War years in North Texas, Paulette Jiles’s The Color of Lightning is at once an intimate look into the hearts and hopes of tragically flawed human beings and a courageous

 Dandelions on 240 North

Dandelions on 240 North

$3.49

Dandelions on 240 North is just a story. It came from a combination of fabrications and actual events that occurred over the years while we spent summers at the lake. It is a book for young people in some ways and a book for adults too. I wrote it with the intention of entertaining the readers. But I also hoped that the readers would enjoy experiencing the innocent approach that children take towards the unique people around them. The neighbors down the road at the lake confuse the nine-year old Jamie. One has been labeled a lesbian because she lived with another lady for nineteen years and was never married before. Another neighbor has been called a killer. He uses his shotgun to kill the moles in his yard. Jamie struggles to understand these people. As the summer passes, she begins to form her own opinions about these people. In the novel, Jamie is the one who shows us how to be more tolerant, but it isn’t easy for her. The dog Dunker is simply a stray dog that happens to add to the emotions that are so plentiful among the neighbors. Humor, anger, hatred, sorrow, and love all come to 240 North on the back of this stray dog. Dunker is the tool that Jamie uses unknowingly to shape her values. BiographyDavid Schnieders was almost born in a taxicab en route to the hospital in Indianapolis. His mother said she still had her shoes on when he showed up. In grade school Schnieders was not much of an athlete despite the efforts of his father and the examples of his older brothers. David was content to play in the basement with his toy town and train. Daniel Craig: Ultimate Professional

Daniel Craig: Ultimate Professional

$1.99

When Daniel Craig was formally announced as the new James Bond, debuting in Casino Royale, not all fans were delighted. But Craig proved them wrong, winning universal acclaim for his riskier, grittier Bond—inexperienced, insecure, and troubled by killing. Beginning with his early career, this book traces the provocative choices Craig made along the path to becoming a film icon. When a BBC television performance brought film offers, Craig opted to costar in Love is the Devil, as artist Francis Bacon’s violent, self-destructive lover. The much-derided Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film raised his profile, but Craig passed on the sequel, continually shunning lead roles to establish himself as a forceful character actor. In Road to Perdition, Craig played a cold blooded child killer. He then costarred in The Mother, having an affair with a woman twice his age. His Hollywood choices remained dark and edgy—feminist hate figure Ted Hughes in Sylvia and a troubled Mossad agent in Munich. Post Casino Royale, Craig starred in both The Invasion and The Golden Compass. Craig remains a very gifted, versatile actor, with a strong body of work—theater, TV, and film. Committed to the Bond franchise for the foreseeable future, Craig is unlikely to be short of other offers.
